Find me on:

Last Monday, October 2, a new tradition began at Thornton Academy. Students, faculty, and staff gathered in Linnell Gymnasium to celebrate the accomplishments of members of our TA community.  Led by teachers Eric Marston '91 and Mike Nelson, we recognized students that excelled both in and out of the classroom and that demonstrated the TA Pillar of the Month: Respect.  The assembly concluded with the announcement of Jack Webb as the Student of the Month for September.  Jack then led the crowd in an impassioned singing of the alma mater.

When asked about his desire to create this type of assembly, Mr. Nelson said, "anybody can create pillars or a mission statement; but if you truly want the students to make these pillars a part of the culture and climate of the school (as well as a part of who they are as people) then we need to recognize, celebrate and embrace those  pillars.  The Student Recognition Assembly does this and brings the pillars to life."

Headmaster Rene Menard '88 announced Jack Webb as the September Student of the Month and praised his willingness to accept others and make them feel valued.  "This student always takes the time to learn about people and put others ahead of himself."  His humble nature reflects all four of the Thornton Academy pillars and he demonstrates his investment to our school through his participation in Varsity Football and Basketball and the Trojan Talk with Jackie Moon profiles that he does on the athletic teams.

Teachers also nominated students for 'Pillar awards' which recognize students for demonstrating the Pillar of the Month (respect for September).  Students are encouraged to wear a sticker to the assembly to show their pride in being nominated.  10 students were chosen at random to win a TA swag bag.
