A native of Illinois, Ms. Nicketakis always wishes she could call herself a Mainer. When not fulfilling duties as Associate Director of Marketing and Summer Programs at Thornton Academy, she enjoys hiking, cooking, reading, running and has recently started playing the piano!

Student Spotlight: Valedictorian Vincent Falardeau '18

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with senior Vincent Falardeau. In addition to being named the Valedictorian for the class of 2018, Vincent has also been recognized as a National Merit Finalist. Additionally, during his time at Thornton Academy, Vincent was a member of the TA Orchestra, String Quartet, Math Team, Amnesty International Club, National Honor Society, and twice went to the national competition for the Academic World Quest Geography Competition.

Arrive alive: A life cut too short by drunk driving

The Thornton Academy community is strong and supportive. It came together recently to memorialize Paul Putney '65, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver when he was only 22 years old. Classmates, friends, and teachers of Paul, and family members, gathered in the New Media Center to dedicate a memorial plaque created by Paul's niece Alana Saunders '12 and nephew Reece Saunders '17.

TA students celebrate their heritage through the annual International Fair

 Students from all over the world and attendees from the greater Saco / Biddeford area joined together in Linnell Gymnasium on Saturday, March 24 for Thornton Academy’s fourth annual International Fair. Organized and run by students, this fair features booths from fifteen different countries with food, games, and musical performances.

TA’s Spring Musical features comedy, tap-dancing, and dreams of making it big

The Thornton Academy Players will present Crazy for You, a musical featuring music by George Gershwin April 5-8 at Garland Auditorium at Thornton Academy.  This comedic show features singing, dancing, and elaborate sets and costumes. It tells the story of Bobby Childs, a wannabe dancer who initiates a comedy of errors as he pursues his dream of making it big.

German Exchange celebrates 20th anniversary of opening homes to new friends

Every year since 1998, families have opened their doors to a student from another country for two weeks. Over 200 students in total from Thornton Academy and Carl-Jakob Burkhardt Gymnasium in Lübeck, Germany have traveled across the ocean to discover a new country, make new friends, and practice a foreign language.

Unified Basketball brings players together to succeed on the court

The newest sport at Thornton Academy is perhaps its most special. Unified Basketball pairs athletes (students with disabilities) with partners (students from the rest of the student body). Together they make a team, both on and off the court.

Trojans Win State-wide Geography Contest, Qualify for Nationals in April

Four Thornton Academy seniors placed first in the Academic World Quest (AWQ) competition held February 27. Sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Maine, the competition took place at the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) offices in Portland.

Two members of the class of 2012 share their experiences in the Peace Corps with current TA students

For the past year, Sean Speckin, a 2012 graduate of Thornton Academy has been working with high school students in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He teaches them English, organizes activities and clubs to promote cultural awareness, and mentors their teachers.
